Call of Duty 5: World at War BETA

Call of Duty: World at War (CoD5) BETA - Axel Larson
Released 10/27/2008
Many mixed feelings came about with the release of the much anticipated CoD:WaW. Many were hoping for a revolutionary game to take the place of all other games in the series. Some people feel satisfied, and others are not. Many people feel that the game is glitchy, jerky, and unpolished. Others feel that the game has stepped up, and is living up to its hype. There is major controversy between CoD players as the community is splitting over the newest addition to the CoD family. Some history of the Call of Duty series will examine why.

When Call of Duty 2 was released, the entire community made the change and loved the game. Although that game was designed and programmed by IW, Infinity Ward, as was vCoD(CoD1), and the other CoDs in the series. So the game felt right at home, as did all the players making the change. When the time for another CoD, Call of Duty 3: Big Red One, came about it was not designed by IW. It was designed by Treyarch, and it had serious issues, to the extent that the entire community agreed that the game was "broken" from all the glitches and would not be played, and went back to the game that they knew worked. When Infinity Ward began the coding for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, everyone got excited again for another Call of Duty game, and CoD4 stepped up big time. The game had a superior engine to the previous games, and was revolutionary, being the first Call of Duty game in the series to feature "Modern Warfare", and not WWII. Call of Duty 4 had amazing sale numbers, as well as hype and credibility by all the competition players loving it as well as the casual gamers. Now Activision, put the torch back into the hands of the people who almost ruined Call of Duty with the CoD3 game...

Now as we are here on November 2nd, almost a week after BETA release, the community has been split again, into two factions. One faction, following the CoD:WaW, hoping that all the bugs will be fixed out, and that the game will prosper competitively. As the other faction is resorting to playing CoD4, and CoD2, to escape the Treyarch programming, and broken gameplay.

Many reasons leave bad impressions when going from a wonderfully programmed CoD4, into a weakly programmed CoD5. Some major concerns are that the sounds are very quiet, and unrealistic. The game almost requires an amazing headset/sound card combination for any sounds to be heard at all. Other problems are that the movements feel jerky, and not smooth at all, feeling more of a modification to CoD4, then it's own game. Also it seems that the game is becoming one sided with SMGs, and automatic rifles. The bolt action guns which all CoD players are in love with since vCoD, and CoD2, have been downgraded to 2 shot kills, unless the shot is a "precision shot" and hits in the upper chest. This is causing controversy as the bolt action players are becoming scarce due to the nerfed effect of the ever key bolt action rifles. Some other obvious issues with the game are that the bomb plant/defuse sounds are not present at all, making it a guessing game when the game comes down to the 1;1s, and 2;1s, turning it into a gamble guessing game. Almost the entire community agrees that this is unrealistic and completely unfair to be a competitive game with no warning being shown when a crucial part of the game is happening.

Many players are finding that the previously stated bugs are problems, but also are loving how well the game registers shots, and the way it plays. The game runs beautifully, the graphics are top notch, the maps feel in unison with the WWII setting, as do the guns. The gameplay itself is a more tactical change from the fast paced, "run and gun" CoD4 gameplay that people had become accustomed too. The new models and refurbished WWII rendition of the Call of Duty series, is very pleasing to watch and play. Once passed the graphics and professional visuals of the game, the gameplay feels very honed in, as a lot of thought went into the game, and is evident when amazing realism is mixed with fantastic gameplay to create a game that has successfully captured both aspects of a good first person shooter.

CoD2 feel, with some amazing graphics. Many feel like they didn't get what they wanted, and since it is made by Treyarch, it really has taken some criticism. At first glance, the game reminds of you of Medal of Honor, with some jerky movements, some weird guns, and some cool effects. After getting deeper into the BETA, you can start to see the potential of this game. Overall the game has potential, and in desperate need of a mod to help spark the competitive scene...
The announced competition mod has been declared as "PAM:COD:WaW", this is confirmed by CAL admins, it is currently under development by Bulletworm and his developer team. Currently 3 maps have been released, and the level cap is at 44.

Although the game has only been released as a beta, and the true release date for the title game is 11/11/2008, all CoD players and fans wait anxiously to see if the game will yield better gameplay.
